Please help.

Sorry to bring up this subject again, but I'm still looking for an open source version of LINUX/UNIX for my 5150/60 computers. Ideally I'll load it from floppy on my 5150, and possibly actually install it as a dual boot on my 5160 XT computer. The problem is simple. I've searched on BING, Google and Web crawler et_al. I just haven't been able to locate any information as to which version of LINUX/UNIX to download and write to floppy. Does anyone here know what I need to get to download the open source versions of these OS's? Where can it be found? I'll also want to get whatever documentation like manuals and help files before I start using the OS on either the XT's hard drive, or one of my 5150's Floppy discs.

Thanks very much. I'll look for your responses.

I used to run Minix 1.5 on an XT with a 10mb full height boat anchor & herc graphics. It was suitable back when a copy of SCO to run on it would have cost 10x as much. It's probably your best bet as it has a compiler chain and a reasonable selection of tools if you wish to do something.

Personally, I'd not go back further than a 386 for any kind of Unix on a pc class machine just because of the limitations of the earlier machines are so intense. OTOH, for the fun of it, why not?

http://themacarchive.net/ for example...

Excellent! This is what I was hoping to find. I'm downloading a couple of the earlier versions to try with both my 5150 and 5160 computers. I'm still waiting for the power supply for the XT to arrive so I can test the XT further, and before I add this to it, but the 5150 should work just fine running from floppy.

Thanks everyone.

Interesting. BTW how can I make boot floppies when I do not have commands vol or dd yet ? Which version is more apropriate for an XT, 1.5 or 1.7.5 ?
