VAX Haul...

The DEC vsxxx-aa mouse arrived today. So I now have a mouse, keyboard and monitor connected to my Vaxstation 4000 90.
>>> show error displays no errors now
>>> TEST /UTIL LCSPX all test screens seem correct, colours are ok etc.

I boot up OpenVMS 7.3 that is on my HDD and run below command
$ @SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP command seems to run ok so I logout and login but I don't have GUI even after a reboot. Its been many years since I played with VMS so I'll have to do further research.

I'll start a new thread for this so I don't keep hijacking Dave's thread.

edit : D together next to each other in my command puts up smiley face!

You installed DECwindows? Section 2 of the Managing DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Systems (AA–Q1E9A–TE) talks about configuring your system and calling DECW$STARTUP.COM to start the GUI.

Busily installing various languages (on SIMH at the moment) to get a 'feel' for how easy (or otherwise) it is...

Had a 'brush' with AUTOGEN to increase the number of global pages and global sections... I survived that with only minor cuts and bruises :)!

I have most of what I want now installed and working on a real VAX (woop, woop).

A couple of things that I could do with a bit of advice on:

I have installed OpenVMS/VAX V7.3 and all of the other 'stuff' from the Hobbyist CD.

I have tried to install APL V4.0 from the layered products CDROM - but I get an error during the installation. I have seen APL V4.0 running on OpenVMS/VAX V7.3 - so it is possible.

However, when I installed DECWindows/MOTIF - it decided to install itself into the startup file. Not a problem, I logged in as SYSTEM and started a DECterm and attempted to use VMSINSTAL to install APL40. The error I get (sorry, I left my notebook with the VAX in another building) is something about fonts. I was wondering whether installing APL from within Motif may have been confusing it? I have installed the very same CD-ROM on a SIMH instance (albeit using VMS V6.2) fine. I will get the correct error message text later.

One thing I would like to do is to stop DECWindows/Motif from auto starting. I think I edit the file SYS$STARTUP:SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM and un-comment the line "$! DEFINE DECW$IGNORE_DECWINDOW TRUE" (i.e. remove the '!' character). Can someone advise if this is correct before I try it please.

I will then give APL another install to see what happens.

I am also having a bit of trouble getting TCP/IP configured correctly. I have installed the software but configuring it is a bit of a headache! I will re-read the manual (again) during the weekend to see if more of it sinks in...

Incidentally PG31 - I installed the 'base' DECWindows product and got nowhere until I installed DECWindows/Motif. This then auto started without any problems at all. I too had run "$ @SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP" to no avail before installing DECWindows/Motif.

Dave,

Not sure. He certainly has my details.

In fact, his video was what I viewed this evening just to check version numbers.

As I said above - I have this very CD-ROM LP kit running on SIMH with VMS V6.2 - and I am now trying to install it on V7.3 (exactly as per Mark's video).

Strange.

Dave

The line "$! DEFINE DECW$IGNORE_DECWINDOW TRUE" will indeed prevent DECwindows from auto starting when it's uncommented.

Just had thought last night though - will it also prevent DECWindows from being started manually - or is the symbol definition only local to the startup script?

Dave

It won't The symbol defined is just for the execution time of the command script unless it has the /GLOBAL qualifier.
