VCF Midwest - who's going?

I have a PET 2001-8 that needs the tape drive re-belted and a new character rom. I was hoping to catch someone traveling via I-94 and meet them at an offramp to give them the PET to donate to a good home at the convention.

I've been asked by a number of people to go to Midwest. This year I'll be flying out but I'm sorely tempted to drive out next year, possibly.

The reward applies to everyone. Look for the Canadian with the crazy hair and 80's glasses and if you are the first to recognize me you win a bottle of Canadian Maple Syrup.

The VCFMW is September 9th and 10th, 2023. It is in Elmhurst, IL.

I think there is a 75% chance I can make it this year. Lord willing!

I have made a list of things to do:
https://www.glensideccc.com/cocofest-chicago-area-attractions-and-thing-to-do/

Leaning Tower YMCA closed, not sure if the tower is still there.
Museum of Broadcast Communications closed, went into storage without a new location,
Oriental Institute has a new politically correct name... Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures
There is a Micro Center in Chicago too, unless it just closed.
Trolley Museum in South Elgin
East Troy Trolley Museum

I have a list of places to eat (It is not the best list, but it is the best I can do on short notice, feel free to make your own list):

The problem is there is not enough parking and if you go somewhere to eat on Saturday then you are going to lose your parking space.
Ideas:
1) Take a limousine/cab/uber to the festival.
2) Plan 9 from Outer Space. See note 1 below.
3) Bring a bagged lunch
4) Eat at the hotel
5) Order out to get your lunch
6) Risk losing your parking space
7) Walk to lunch
8) Make enough bagged lunches for ten people and sell the bagged lunches to others. Let's go retro like 33 AD. Let us have two fish and five loaves of bread.

Where to eat lunch...
---
il-83 and Ogden Ave restraints
Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen
---
IL-83 & West 22nd Street, Oakbrook Terrace, IL
Ditka's Oakbrook
---
IL-83 & e St. Charles rd.
Potbelly, Chick-fil-A, Portillo's Elmhurst, Subway, Omelette House, and Manny's Ale House.
---
IL-83 & North Avenue, Elmhurst, Addison Township, IL 60126
Mack's Golden Pheasant Restaurant, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, ...
---
Parking idea:
Note 1) Plan 9 from Outer Space

You can park at the Walmart Supercenter in Elmhurst and have someone drive you to the Waterford Banquet. Or you can walk. It is only a 13-minute walk one way. Or you can ride a bike. It is only a 3-minute bike ride.

Bring a lunch, ride with a friend to lunch, order out, eat at the hotel, or fast for part of the day.

How close are the bars...

There is a small restraint with drinks at the Clarion Inn/Waterford Banquet and Conference Center Elmhurst

Standard Meadery (Winery) Villa Park, IL

Brauer House (Friendly Biker Bar) (warning the music can have bad language) Lombard, IL

Schnitzel Platz Glendale Heights, IL

I'll be traveling via I-90 across northern Indiana...don't know how close that is to you...

That might work out. I live nw of Buchanan, MI. There's an offramp where 90 crosses over 31 west of South Bend. There's a Pilot travel center slightly north of 90 on 31. Besides the Pet, I'll dig through my stash and see what else I would be willing to give away.

Is the parking seriously that bad? It's only about an hour from my house, but I don't like the idea of leaving my vehicle in a Walmart parking lot a half mile away. And then if you buy stuff, you need to lug it back that far.

I was going to post the same question this evening, glad someone beat me to it.

I'll be there!

Am trying to decide weather to come or not, I've never been to a VCF event, and its about a 9 hour drive from where I am in Canada.
I am still on the fence if I want to give this a try or not...

Any tips for first time comers, I see parking is unobtanium, great to know about some of the other options, I'm not adverse to a bit of walking! I have no clue where I am going in the area, so I hope the GPS will save me LOL.

I don't suppose it would be bad form to bring some sort of a cart with you in high hopes you can find what your after there?

From anyone going to events in the past recent, what are the chances of finding stuff for sale like IBM 9595, or some sort of a early 90's tower, like AST or Compaq fitted with EISA slots?

Assume its all preferred to be cold hard cash transactions there?

thanks
Jonathan
