Walmart has antique computer parts

Walmart.com has not been a web site for their store in ages. It turned in to a multi-vendor portal like Amazon or eBay. So there is all kinds of stuff on there. A real pain when you just want to see if the local store has something or if it is in stock.
 
Then again, I walked into a Wal-Mart in Monterrey (Mexico, not California) c.a. 2000 and found a lone Sega TeraDrive on display (really!) Extra bizarre considering it was never released outside of Japan...sadly, I didn't have the money to buy it.

I dunno, it's working on my end. I needed some tail light tape and the site said there were three in stock at the moment. So I went and got one. It seems to always work whenever I need to go there for something specific.

I had a similar experience. I was watching a youtube video of a guy that diagnosis cars, using an oscilloscope and other interesting tools. The guy is Russian and in one episode he decided to make Borscht instead of working on a car. I had never had it before, and I was way to lazy to try and make it, so I went to the walmart app and searched for it, and I found it, right down to the aisle it was on, and it will even show a map. Not nearly as good as making it fresh I'm sure, but at least my curiosity was satisfied.

I'll say that their website, and especially their mobile phone app, has gotten a lot better recently. The only issue I have is that the map doesn't list everything, so there could be an aisle U4 or something, and the map only lists A, B, and C. When I asked for help, eventually I found someone that knew that it was in the gas station.

My favorite thing about walmart.com is ordering movies though. It's got a good integration with their VUDU site, so if I order a bluray that isn't in the store, if it's available for digital copy too, I can watch that immediately if I want, even if the disc is still two days away. I've also noticed that if you buy discs in the store, and pay with the walmart app, it will prompt you to add them to your VUDU account.

All of this is lightyears away from how it used to be. I remember when the playstation 3 bluray remote came out, walmart.com had it listed for about $25, and it was closer the $40 in the store (if my memory is right). I asked them to price match it and they said that they don't match websites. I told them that it wasn't just any website, but their own, and they said that they only match "real competitors" to which I told them that a real competitor was anyone but them that was going to get my money. I ordered it from their website, and felt all proud of myself, thinking I had gamed the system and that I'd be able to pick it up later that day or the next at the latest. Nope. They website back then would ship a completely new item, even if there was already one in the store. It took like 2 weeks for me to get it. It took YEARS before I'd ever buy another thing from them.

I think these days they are trying really hard to be competitive with Amazon. I think they still have a little ways to go as far as ease of use is concerned, but these days I always check to see if walmart has a similar price for what I'm going to buy instead of just going to Amazon like I had previously done. Part of this is that I live near their headquarters, and I'm technically supporting local business :)

I do a lot of cooking and I usually go to walmart once in a while to stock up on canned goods, cheese, and some things that for some reason I can't find at any other grocery store. Prices are good, quality's good, hardly any different than buying it at any other supermarket chain. Anything I shop for on amazon anymore that I think I may be able to find there I cross-shop and usually can, at a significant discount and no shipping.

Weird that I feel less guilty supporting the evil walmart than I do the amazon juggernaut, but those are the times I suppose.
 
My main gripe with Walmart's grocery department is that it differs from every major supermarket chain in one significant way. You can never be sure that they're going to have an item you want in stock/on the shelf when you go in. There are lots of holes in their inventory model -- it needs work. There's always empty slots on their shelves. You'll never see an item that's not in stock in a real grocery store. And there's no empty space whatsoever on their shelves, either. Everything is always there whenever you want it. Even those advertised specials rarely go out of stock in the supermarket chain stores. Walmart seems to have a different policy in their food department. Maybe it's by design. I know that if I really need an item there I'll sometimes buy two instead of just one so I'll be sure I don't run out at the same time Walmart does. Could this actually be part of their slick marketing scheme to make you buy more than you actually need at the time? :)
 
Walmarts bakery section seems to be cheaper then other local chains with bakeries (break and cookies mostly). They have some decent pepperoni rolls but they are not there all the time and usually only near the checkout lines. They do have holes of products on their shelves I just figured they dumped one brand and went with another and have not received the inventory yet.

My issue with Wallmart is I purchased an air humidifier there and went back a month later to buy a replacement filter for it and they had none and the girl I talked to said they won't be ordering any either because of corporate (this was at the start of the season too). Kind of weird since I can still buy bags for an old vacuum cleaner there.

I don't like the website much because they let 3rd party sellers sell stuff on it.
 
The walmart near me is nasty, very ghetto. Bare concrete floors, the same 20 or so songs on the overhead speakers, never have prices labeled properly, the price checking kiosks have long since broken, sliced ham needs to be used within a week or it starts to smell awful, never have any shirts that aren't made of thin plasticy material, when items are not on the shelves they are simply "out", they replaced a bunch of checkout lanes with those horrible self-checkout things and arranged things to herd all of the cowsumers in to it, and don't even think about going in to the restroom. But holy crap, a lot of things are half the price of Publix (Where shopping is a pleasure to some CEO's wallet).

You have obviously never met my mother. And if you ever do, never eat anything she gives you. She will swear it is still good because it's been in the freezer for the last three years and things in the freezer never age. :puke:

The walmart sliced ham has printed use by dates that are usually two or three weeks later. Obviously that is a lie. But for whatever it is worth (about twice the price) the Publix stuff usually does seem to stay good for up to about two weeks. But now that I think of it, perhaps that should worry me.
 
I keep everything meat, butter and cheese related in the freezer
And carry an extra sharp set of knives, no more worries.

Never looked back, Freezer burn is better than rot and takes a lot longer to happen

A friend I worked with had a freezer in his basement in the same room as the pool table we used. I guess somebody had put frozen meals in it many years before and forgot about it. Anyway we found out by digging in it one day that mold or fungus (no idea what it was) will grow in ice even if it is VERY slow. The ice crystal growth was cool to look at too.

Meat can last something like 6 months in a freezer if wrapped correctly. I use freezer paper making sure there are no air pockets and then wrap it in aluminum foil. Cheese last long enough if you keep it wrapped correctly in the fridge and not get it moist. Something like provalone will grow mold in a couple weeks if not stored correctly.

When it comes to food never assume anything.

The whole good by dates on food (and medicine) you see on packaging is either just a guess, incorrect, or just a guide to when something might taste a little different but its still edible. Plus people have their own preferences with respect to their smell. Air is full of bacteria so once you open that shrink wrapped or canned item there is a timer ticking to when it spoils. Hell there is a use by date for salt like anything is going to happen to a unopened container of salt (an opened one will suck in moisture and clump up over time but still be usable).

There are people on youtube that open C rations dating back to WW2 and EAT THEM. One guy was saying something about tasting almonds in some snack that didn't have that ingredient (he ate small amounts of cyanide). People find old dried figs while digging in ancient ruins and they somehow have the urge to taste the stuff.

While I agree sharp knives are great if you like cooking, the most important thing to have in the kitchen is a working thermometer.
