Wang 2200, is it worth any $$, or just for modding fun.

Not sure if this is the right section for my post...

Hi

I have had a Wang 2200 in pristine shape ever since it was donated to Vancouver Island Univ in 1994. It was from the Can Forces Base in Nanaimo BC when they closed and I ended up with it when the school had no room/need for it. It has a full complement of expansion boards , I believe 4 z80's, and a couple of 8080's, has the printer card and the HDD controller and all the RAM expansions. It also has a 4 user network card, you just need the terminals ;) Unfortunately I do not have any Wang OS/Boot disks (8inch) so all I can do is power it up and heat up the room.

This computer also has the 8 inch Disk Drive and an 8 MB Hard drive (HUGE). This computer is housed in an enameled Steel case and all interior structure seems to be made of solid Brass (wtf), All in all it weighs in at over a hundred pounds (estimate, I cannot lift it and I worked in warehousing).

My plan if its not worth anything is to store all the internals and just use the case for a ridiculous water-cooled rig with multiple MB's (One an htpc server the other my game server)

Have a great week

There are a few Wang collectors, so I wouldn't throw it out.

Thet's not brass, just chromated steel--try a magnet on it--it'll stick.

Chromated steel, huh, never thought to try a magnet on it! I got too excited when I saw Wang control boards selling for $hundreds on E bay, doesnt mean anyone buys them though I guess. I have packed this thing around since 94 so I wont be throwing it out anytime soon, I was hoping for a $10k appleII response :D (who doesn't), but I am just as comfortable holding onto it for another 18 years, especially since I can utilize the case without damage to the system.

You'll see less and less yellow chromated finishes because the EU and the USA have virtually banned the use of hexavalent chromium compounds (they're very toxic and operations using them in quantity sometimes end up on the Superfund list). Trivalent chromium treatment is being used by a few manufacturers, but the color is quite different--almost clear.

This sort of reminds me of the thieves who stole a mess of "gold plated" bathroom fixtures, only to find out that the "gold" was really PVD zirconium nitride..

Hi,

I'm a 2200 programmer from way back. Do you still have this machine and does it still work? Are there any terminals with it?

Thanks, Ken

That is a huge Wang you have there!

come on guys, several replies and no Wang jokes? really?

Reminds me of... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEF1F-VswsM

MMmm... Freezepop. :)

I almost bought a Wang word processing system, with built-in daisy-wheel printer and two terminals, from college surplus 20 years ago... it had two terminals, if I recall correctly. I didn't have the space for it, and it would be long gone now.

I did pick up and use an NEC daisy wheel hard copy terminal (great printer), and an IBM 3151 terminal (both attached to my 386-40 Linux box), but ended up leaving them both behind when I joined the Navy.

that song is awesome. My Wang had a riser and a hard drive. plenty of RAM as well. its a good thing you didn't take your Wang with you to the Navy. you don't want to many seamen around a Wang......okay I'll stop. I swear.

Think the only Wang system I have is an 8088 clone. I'm a little confused (not as familiar with systems of this era). Looking up a Wang 2200 pulls up this picture:

. The pictures above are something else?

A bit of a reach but anyone know why it's called a 2200? I'm familiar with the Datapoint 2200 and am a bit surprised that the specific model number would be used by two companies unless it perhaps had some meaning.

Wow, been a while. Thanks for the interest, in the end I decided to keep it whole and restore what I could. Fixxed up the boards around some leaking batteries and cleaned up all the connections, luckily none of the jumper wires came loose on any of my boards, yay! Unfortunately the powersupply was damaged in a flood and sits in a tote waiting for a some-day project to rebuild it. If I can even manage such a thing.

One day it will rise again. For now it is dry storage.
Have Fun

Are you still looking for a wang 2200? We were cleaning out my dad's office and found one along with a printer. image.jpg

I know this is a rather late reply to your post, but do you still have the wang system you posted on the site?
Have been looking for one for ages and willing to pay any reasonable prize.

Yours,
