What do you like for anti-virus software on win7?

The interesting thing is that the updater still runs, still downloads the latest version - but then won't install it. Trying to install it manually fails too.

I wonder if there's some registry key or some other simple thing preventing it.
If it was simple somebody would fake it so the installer sees the machine as W10 and run. I think the new installer is coded so that something is missing and won't install on W7 or older.

I still use XP (and yes, on the web) for a daily driver. Common sense keeps you out of trouble far better than any AV suite.
Although it helps that XP is no longer a major target for attacks from the internet. I still remember Blaster infecting my XP machine during installation. Not much you can do in that case, except disconnecting it until a proper firewall is in place (Zone Alarm did a decent job back then).

XP has never stopped being a major target on the internet. If you stand up an XP machine and expose it directly to the internet, it will be owned in less than 30 minutes, usually much less.

Even older versions of Windows are still targeted because they contain the same vulnerabilities, though the malicious code generally doesn't work completely, or at all due to missing functionality in the kernel or optional Windows components.

I must be lucky then. Although I don't use XP very often, when used they are always on the internet and nothing has ever happened to them.

I have one friend who still uses 7 online. I put AVG free on his systems. I don't use Avast anymore because of install bugs in the past.

AVG works fine, but I don't like it when it blocks access to a number of sites because of so called expired security certificates. We hit "Accept the risk and continue" if Firefox blocks any. Sometimes we have to disable AVG for a second just to access the sites, but the weird thing is - there is no problem reaching the same exact sites with Linux.

Remember guys, Firefox stops supporting Windows 7 this September! Time to finally retire that PC, upgrade to Linux, or whatever you fancy.

Windows 7 stopped receiving root certificate updates years ago. As those certs expire or are revoked, more and more sites that use SSL/TLS are going to break and no longer work.
