Texas Computer Reset in Dallas is still going for just a little while (new LGR video Feb. 2022)

Covers: Texas
Sigh. Ya know. I needed this with all the troubling headlines today. Now I'm a laughing jellyfish, but please don't theorize on how I go about laughing. Clue: I jiggle a lot.

LGR's reporting Computer Reset was burgled.. The tweets are quotes as such:

Annoyed to report that Computer Reset was broken into this week. Thieves made off with a number of valuables, including the remaining two IBM 7496 Executive Workstations that were set aside for museums. One color, one mono. They look like what is pictured here and are quite rare.

The thieves also took a few other things:

TRS-80 Model 4 computer
IBM Model M Terminal keyboard
VT100 keyboard
VT102 terminal
IBM 5175 Professional Graphics monitor
$180 cash

Some pretty rare things there so yeah, keep an eye out for some of these popping up if you can

This is just turning into a non-stop trainwreck

Edited: Oh it was burgled....again.

oh it's not the first time, just the latest time

Hopefully they have security cams and can bust the crack heads doing it

Have to watch eBay and marketplace to see if these “turn up”

strange that it gets robbed long after the hype started.. when the really good stuff is gone.
My speculation is that the LGR update reassured whoever it was that while most of the good stuff was gone, there was still items remaining that made it worthwhile, either because they had yet to be claimed, or because there was stuff in layaway.
If you notice in his video it's all boarded up now, so they absolutely needed either to be a recent visitor or saw what they needed in the video.

Why doesnt the place have a security system, even basic one? I cant believe with all that stuff, even before it was liquidated, it wasnt somewhat secured, even in a crappy 80s way... aka basic window / door/ motion sensors, alarm and vhs security cams.

Because the time and effort went into Facebook, not practical things. That same thing happens with everything now a days. Because as its been brought up many times before. Common sense is not common, and people dont seem to have it anymore.

The time and effort has been put into place trying to clean this place up and re-homing equipment. It’s a shame how many comments in this thread are dumping on the whole effort and the relentless drive of dedicated volunteers. Shame on you that are doing so.

First, yeah, the stuff is in a warehouse. But I haven’t found a single roach or spider in anything nor mold. Clean the dust off of it and move on. Don’t trash the effort because you think falsely think these things are there.

Secondly, they chose Facebook to do sign ups. Deal with it. Don’t trash the effort because your personal preferences don’t like Facebook. Either deal with the requirement or move on.

Thirdly, this has been a selfless effort to re-home vintage equipment instead of scrapping it. The facility is extremely walkable; there’s nothing in walking paths. Exits are clearly marked. All lights are operational. The volunteers deal with any issues immediately.

Lastly, the latest break in was targeted as well. From what I’m reading on Facebook, this person would have had to know the locked room where the volunteers were keeping museum donations. They also had to be a retro collector knowing the value of those retro workstations. Sadly, the thief put a mark on themself - the CR folks know where all these executive workstations have either gone or who has them. Richard had the only ones in existence. If another one pops up in the vintage community, you have your thief. Good luck trying to get those systems working or get rid of them without exposing yourself.

The volunteers have busted their butts the past three years - unpaid - to help our community. Offer them some slack. I was able to get twenty 2’x2’x2’ boxes of Toshiba 90s laptop parts because of the volunteers.

It really is a shame, and I get the effort invested and appriciate it for the community. Sadly its way past the time for me to travel to Texas without knowing whats left. Shame too im a 486/Socket 7 guy mostly. Looked like there was still a decent amount left. But that was a few weeks ago. Would love a copy of that dos 4.1 in Spanish though!

As far as the break in, I have to put that on Clint. He should have never showed that stuff on youtube. He mentioned how rare they are, and that was enough for someone who is broke and has loose morals... Or perhaps just greedy. I'd be happy to be first in line to beat this persons ass!

If anyone is going to go, can you look for a Compaq 5300 laptop or at least motherboard for me? Even take a few untested machines if they are available. Its the machine I always wanted, but had to settle for a Dell XPi with no soundcard due to my budget back then. I do miss that trackball though!

LGR was specifically invited there to record video for the purpose of publicizing the wind-down. He bears zero guilt.

Announcement yesterday is that CR hosted Free Geek Twin Cities during this past weekend, who loaded all the remaining CPUs and laptops (working or not) and cards and parts into two 26-foot U-Haul trucks to take them to their firsthand and secondhand computer store in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Currently, what remains in the warehouse are mostly the following:
- Monitors
- Terminals
- Printers
- Boxed software - excluding Windows or DOS
- Cables
We do not have any plans for public events at this time, in light of what happened last week.

The good news:

1. The remaining museum items are now removed from the building and secured elsewhere.

2. Free Geek Twin Cities shares the same mission that CR does: to get the vintage stuff into the hands of people who will use it, not scrap it. Their website is https://www.freegeektwincities.org and they will have items from Computer Reset on there in due time.

3. There is still the Computer Reset Buy and Sell FB group, where people are selling/buying/asking for/trading stuff both found at Computer Reset and not found there, even internationally. If anyone wants to ask for things there, they are welcome to.

I think what he meant was the video sparked the interest of the criminal (unintentionally). I dont think anyone is blaming LGR for this, its just a byproduct of the video.
