8086 Software Choices

lutiana: A free alternative that works great on the XT is DOS Commander, but I am not sure where I got it.
Perhaps you mean the DOS Controller? If so, you might have gotten it from me. I don't use "file managers" but DC is probably better than Norton's stuff.
Here is my tongue in cheek review: http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcforum/showpost.php?p=80724&postcount=9 and there's a link to Simtel there too.

PS: I said I don't use "file managers" but that is not entirely true. I use DM to view files because it views everything and uses single key strokes (F1, F2 ...etc.) to determine sorting. That is why it is such a good front end for an e-mail client.

I believe that you are correct sir! On both counts

As far as DC vs NC there are pros and cons to either. NC is a bit more powerful and has a lot more functionality, but DC is very light weight and gets the job done.

Mostly I use NC for its ability to transfer files over a serial cable from machine to machine. Plus NC 5.5 has a bunch of disk imaging functionality that is awesome for making and archiving disk images on my 386. It can create img files and write them to 360k, 1.2m, 720k and 1.44mb disks.

YES!!This was EXACTLY What I Was After!!!

YOW!Thanks for all the suggestions!I can see that there will be MUCH retro-gaming in store for me and that old Zenith!
There are so many great choices that it will be YEARS until I've exausted just a portion of the suggestions.
As for the "productivity"stuff, well,I think it would be appropriate to have WP or Lotus Works available, just to show what an old PC could do.(Besides having fun gaming!)
Yes it does have a 2400 modem, are there BBSs that I could use it to access?
Again THANKS to all who have responded!

Yes, definitely try to use that modem. In addition to the unique MTE I mentioned earlier, I've also got ProComm v2.3 dated March 28, 1986 which (as someone pointed out earlier) would be a classic. Apart from terminal applications and fun stuff like that, there are indeed some BBSs left. Someone on this forum operates the Borderline BBS in California. Unfortunalely he is overseas for a little while and the board is temporarily down, but the number is 951-242-3593 so you can try it another time. It's run on a C64. There is also a list of Canadian BBSs ordered by area code on the Hack Canada site.

PS: If I can help you find any of the software that I have mentioned in this thread then just send PM or e-mail. Of course the same goes for others here too. :)

I recently aquired my first functional 8086 machine.(A Zenith SuperSport)I was wondering what people's favorite software choices were for this vintage?
What games work well, what Productivity programs etc...
It has a CGA B&W LCD display,640K and a 20MB MFM HD.Currently,it's running Zenith DOS 3.3.
Thanks!

You can grab a metric ton of software for it here:

ftp.oldskool.org in /pub/misc/xtfiles.rar

The only thing that will suck is the reversed LCD screen, for which you need games that can reverse their colors to look normal on that screen. Pyro, Flight Simulator 3 or 4, and Vette! are a few that I remember that can do that.

Why doesn't anybody mention Paradox (database program)?

I got version 3.0 on 360Kb disks (15 of them!), but I really got no idea how I actually use the program... Maybe that should be it's own thread...
I spent a lot of time in the early 1990's writing paradox database scripts. it's was a lovely products.
