Anyone willing to organize a parting?

It doesn't look like anything in that trailer is packed at all. If you tried to move the trailer as-is, everything in it would get smashed.

Most likely. Attempting to pull that trailer down the highway sounds like an excellent way to end up broken down, crashed, or with a DOT officer educating you on the finer points of how you're about to have a really bad day :) If you even got as far as the highway, I'm sure the brake shoes are rusted to the drums. If you wanted to move the whole thing, you'd spend a lot of time repacking, bracing everything, etc. I'm sure it's not air ride at that age!

It's close enough for me to go look at, but I'm not sure I'd want to deal with it. There are likely some gems in there, but as anyone who's managed a large lot of misc computer gear mixed with actual trash knows, this is probably a year or two of nights and weekends to clean up. If I were picking it up, I'd go empty it out with another truck/trailer, then either get the trailer roadworthy and take it back empty, or pay someone to grab it with a rollback, if it looked like it was worth saving.

You can't get a decent inventory without taking everything out which looks like a lot of work. For the money they are asking it is not worth the effort. If it was in a warehouse where you could get around and look at everything it might be worth offering the owner a small amount for whatever would fit inside a small truck and then work on them as needed. Is NC pretty humid? I would bet by the looks of the surface rust on the computer case up front that most of the metals are rusty.

Here's my assessment, for what it's worth:

I see several (at least 4) PC XT era monitors. I see several (at least three) newer PS/2 generation monitors. I see several (at least 2) third-party monitors. I see a PC or PC/XT, and a PS/2 model. I see an Apple //gs power supply, a Apple 5.25" Drive, and what is possibly a Rana full height disk drive (for Apple or Atari). I see a lot of cables. I see a cool red dial phone. I see an old heater. I see boxes. I see a lot of junk. I see a somewhat dilapidated trailer that is way bigger and is supposedly holding more stuff than the photos do justice.

There just isn't enough information. You could try to extrapolate what might be there from the clues above (lots of PC stuff. some Apple stuff, lots of old junk) or you could try to get more information. To that end, I contacted the seller and asked for more photos. He said he would provide some tomorrow, but in the meantime he offered up that he sold a "bunch of pc xt at ps11 Keyboards". I'm not interested myself but will pass along photos if he actually sends some. Someone really needs to go out there and get inside that trailer and inspect it from one end to the other to see what's there.

Assuming the contents inside are worth it, I'd offer what it was worth minus 50% up to $980 for the contents. In other words, offer half what it's worth up to his $980 flat offer, or less, maybe $900. The clean-up work and disposal costs will not be insignificant. If agreed, show up with a team of 6 people and two big U-Hauls, one for the keepers and one for the junk. Start tearing through the trailer and make a quick decision as to whether to keep or junk, and sort out the junk into donatable items and landfill. Drop off the donatable items at a Goodwill or whatnot, take the rest to landfill, and then divvy up the loot. It would take a day but you'd get all the heavy sorting out of the way. Sell off enough to re-coup your investment and revel in the glory of having accomplished a Big Score.

My best assessment: it's probably filled with a lot of PC crap that either might or might not be worth $980. A couple or three complete IBM PC systems might get you to that amount, and assuming the rest of that trailer isn't just filled with garbage and you're into PC stuff then it is at least worth a gander. But to pay $980 for it sight unseen would be foolish in my estimation.

I agree with the prior opinions on the trailer, it is junk and a liability. Leave it be.

As much as I would want to take a peek inside, it's probably all junk that's not worth picking up. Not worth paying that much if I just wanted the monitors.

Exactly. Probably could repair some of those 5153 (or possibly 5151) CRT's but most of it looks like rubbish. I Dont care what type of collector you are, your not going to throw good stuff into a huge pile. Id say the value is $300 to $500 total with the latter being a huge stretch. (a hidden gem we cant see)

I got screwed by the crappy forum software. Again.

There were many acknowledgements of valuable contributions from members, but they are lost and it's too late to retype them.

So, I've rethought my position. This is probably just the junk that's left from years of cherry-picking. I'd love to be proved wrong, but I probably won't be.

Screw it. I'd settle for a forum that didn't eat your posts.

There are a couple of NES consoles in there too. Around a hundred bucks for them if they work.

On light duty trailers and travel trailers, the rule of thumb is to replace tires every 5 years regardless of treadwear. You're also supposed to yearly or so regrease bearings. My father in law's unmaintained boat trailer had a hub bearing seize while pulling onto the freeway and the hub broke in the process. I just finished repacking bearings, new hub seals, new brakes, and new tires on our camper trailer. There's no effin way I'd attempt to move that trailer (if I had a truck to do it), especially loaded with all that junk given that the tires are probably shot and who knows if the wheel hubs are in good serviceable condition. You could easily have a blowout/detread or seize a hub with it having sat clearly for so long.

Still, it would be a shame if there were something useful buried in there. It would be nice to at least see some more photos with the pile shuffled around. But from the look of it, most cases will likely be FUBARed regardless of metal or plastic, so I wouldn't expect more than perhaps perhaps a few expansion cards or parts to have survived.

Roberttx, I feel your pain. I've learned to always select all+copy before I submit a large posting here.

Capt. 2110, you're right, I forgot to include the NES consoles in my assessment. Those at least should be rescued for the next eBay resurgence.

Unknown_K, good damn point.

geoffm3, agreed. Now, someone whose building a tiny house might find it to be a diamond in the rough.

So whose going to mount a mission to at least go look? Now I feel invested in at least knowing what all is in there :D

If you do go, bring gloves and maybe a mask. If rodents got in there and made it a home then you're going to find much sorrow.

I'm sure the military 5-ton would drag it out :) Might get home and have just the kingpin though!

Anyone remember the movie tremors?

Im sure the trailer is beyond in need of service. I doubt it all is worth the hassle. Yes could be a hidden gem. honestly stuff we pine over all day is destroyed or tossed on a daily basis. You all know that. Doesnt mean we need to invest in every pile of junk we see. Keep your eyes open, be vigilant.. but don't squander your money if you dont need to.

P.S. Avoid all "Antique" shops that sell old electronics. They are out to screw you.

We are likely busy the next few weekends, but if we end up bored with nothing interesting to do, we might run down and check it out, at least report back on what is there.

The seller just posted more pictures. There is what looks to be an XT and an AT with... IBM's own uncommon 3.5 floppy drive upgrade. The Apple stuff looks very, very nasty. Another thick white IBM monitor can be seen, and one of the previously shown monitors looks to have part of it's shell missing. A shame.

I saw a couple of blurry ones that weren't there last time. Couldn't make much out.

Also, I notice that he has deleted the option of buying the contents only. I guess too many people told him that the trailer was junk.
