I finally got and replaced the CMOS battery in my Compaq Presario 5403 mini tower desktop. The computer has an ASUS mother board, and is working pretty well. I found an old Compaq restore disk and used it to install Windows 98. So Now I can at least tell a bit more about this computer. The restore wasn't perfect because the disk I used was for a later computer. Most everything is fine, but the audio and network adapters still aren't working. The drivers aren't the same. Below, I have outlined it's hardware; at least what I can determine right now. (Most of it doesn't matter here, but I'm including it any way.) This computer is almost there! I'm still having some issues incorporating the 360Kb floppy drive, but with a little more playing around with the jumpers, should have it fully functional by this weekend. Then, I'll start writing a batch of diskettes for my 5150!
Model - Compaq Presario 5403
64 Megs of RAM
4 Gig hard drive The restore disk used the entire 4 Gigs during setup, so I'll run Partition Magic later to set up a dual boot with Windows 3.1)
5 1/4" floppy drive. 350 Kb DDSD
3.5" floppy drive
DVD ROM
4 USB 1.0 ports on an expansion card
Parallel port
Serial port
PS2 ports for the keyboard and mouse.
*Network interface adapter
*Sound Blaster audio
On board video: Not really sure what it is. Windows report it as a generic video adapter,
Everything works, with the exception of the audio and network adapters. This computer will eventually need to connect to the Internet, so I'll need to get a driver for the network adapter. The problem is that neither HP, nor Compaq seem to have any Windows 98 drivers or resources for anything this old. I was able to locate the Sound Blaster audio drivers, but that still leaves the network adapter. The thing is, without the network adapter, I still can't do much with the computer to transfer files, unless I burn a few CDs.
So, does anyone have the network adapter driver they can send me, or possibly a web site to download this driver to my main computer to transfer by floppy or USB device? I can see this computer getting a lot more use than I first thought it would.
Thanks again...
