Gary Kildall Story

I have to say, though, that this series by Al's Geek Lab was probably the best researched that I've seen/read.

He's clear as to what's speculation and what's fact. Also, the whole "meeting with IBM" story sounds much more plausible than other versions that I've heard.

I find if funny that people who actually made a decent amount of money and had influence in the computing field are losers because they didn't end up winning the monopoly. You have to do some pretty shady things to get to a monopoly and keep it.

Those are the smart people who took the money and did something with their lives.

Alcorn's Law - "If you have the choice between fame and fortune, take fortune"

Fortune has its own set of issues. Somebody did a study where people in the upper middle class were happiest because of work life balance and not worrying about basic needs. Sucks to be poor and sucks to be rich because of all the leaches looking to feed off of you.

Great series. I like how they cut through the bull and rumors, yet mentioned the hearsay as well.

I re-watched several episodes of the Computer Chronicles on archive.org a few years ago, and I seen him break out of the role of co-host and pitch his company's products. In an episode covering Windows 3.1, Stuart speaks of the memory requirements for it. During the segment, Gary remarks GEM can run on machines with only 512k. The comparison seemed kind of weird an unwarranted.

NatGeo's documentary "Valley of the Boom" had a segment on Netscape. They were another giant that lost the wind in their sails.

Hard to make money selling a product like Netscape when Microsoft Explorer was free with Windows.
But Netscape wasn't selling the browser; they were giving it away to make money selling the server. Of course, they were also giving away the web server tools to build market share. Having MS compete by offering a free product to match Netscape's free product shouldn't have caught Netscape by surprise.

Well, why not write Al and tell him he used your photo without permission. He seems a decent guy and can update this video or at least add something to the textual portion. I don't know where he got the picture but he may have just found it on the Internet with nothing to say who's it was.

I recall some pages looked and worked better with Netscape over Explorer. In that case it would've been "better than free."

I have no way to contact him. YouTube does not have private messaging. I have tried in good faith to communicate with him through comments on his video, and asked him to check in here so I could PM him, but he appears to have blocked me because my responses are vanishing into the ether. I was trying to resolve this amicably without going through a YouTube copyright violation report, which would hurt his channel, but at this point I'm not seeing an alternative. I'll give it another day or two in the hopes that one of my messages got through.

He claims that he only used stuff released under a creative commons license, but (1) I have never released the image under a creative commons (or other) license. And in any case, all variants of the creative commons license require attribution so if it is out there somewhere identified as released under such a license, the attribution should be there and travel with any use of the image. But (2) it's not on the web. I've searched. It's not anywhere to be found (by the simple means I used). So how did he get it? I did give a print to Gary so it could be a snapshot or scan of that, but copyright is not conveyed with a print.

Thanks to tradee for bringing this to my attention here. Steve, you are most definitely not blocked on my channel and as you can see in my comment reply on YouTube I asked you to simply reply to me with your details and I would be more than happy to attribute you, as I did for any other sources I managed to get a source for (dozens). My video is all about how Gary Kildall had been ripped off by Microsoft/IBM, so it would be ironic if I was deliberately ripping off people! I have no intention of doing so. As I say, please do provide me any details and I will happily attribute them..for now, I will assume your name is Steve Toner and place that in the video description (see updated video credit attached). I assure you, all of my intentions are well founded and I would never try to rip anyone off; The image was found via a simple google search.

Thank you,

Alistair

Al says he has made a reply post here but it is awaiting moderation. In his reply he includes his reply to you and that he will update the video to give you attributions. WIth all the credit he gives to others at the end of part III I did not expect him to do otherwise.
