My Site

Well, I believe 7zip has a higher compression level. I might be wrong, though. I am limited to 5Mb per file and 1Gb total. What is the highest compression program for DOS?

Not sure about best compression, but ZIP will be sufficent, your downloads from what I can see are quite small, even LanMan is only 2.8MB.
If needed you can also split up a ZIP file in to segments, which was very popular once upon a time because you could span something like a 10Mb file over a bunch of 1.44Mb floppies.

Appreciate the links though, even in 7z :)

With large files over email, I had that issue, needed a 700Mb ISO from someone at one point - solution was a FTP hosting account - proven to be damn handy and only costs me around $3-4 a month for 1Gb storage. If you had that, you could also put your downloads there and link from your page (just an idea if you don't mind spending $ on it).

I really am trying not to spend much on the site. Actually, I haven't spent a dime yet! I might switch to zip the next time I update the files.

I'm surprised to see the current version of Spinrite on your site. I'm not sure Steve Gibson would appreciate it, since he's selling at on grc.com for $89.

Okay. I just updated my site and changed all of the downloads to ZIP. Check it out!

Great! I just did a check of the compaqdos331.rar file and that is indeed very small. In fact it is only 75% of an LHA or ZIP file. Still, my unrar in DOS won't recognize the file.

Also, us DOS users can generally not use long file names so it might be worth your while to make those more DOS friendly since that is the focus of the site. :)

Okay. I have made each file under 8 characters. The compaq dos I don't expect to be used in DOS itsself because the file just has IMG files in it.

I just updated it mostly in behind-the-scenes code, but I added a little welcome surprise.

I've been doing some updates on the site. Attention Apple Lovers: I am a PC guy. I know very little about Apple computers. I posted an article about the Apple ][. I can imagine it has errors. I would like to post an article about the original Mac and the Lisa, too. Could any of you Apple fans out there give me some info? I don't want you to write the article for me, but could you give me some bases to cover?

Okay, I was thinking of ways I could improve my site, and I realized something. One of the hardest things for me way back when I first started working with DOS and Windows 3.1 was the drivers. I couldn't figure out how to install them or even how to acquire them for that matter. So, I decided to put a few drivers up on my site. Now here's my question: Would any of you happen to have/know of good Windows 3.1/DOS drivers I can add to my site?

Thanks. I will probably add some Ensoniq AudioPCI drivers first because 1) I currently have a copy on my laptop and 2) it is extremely hard to find a DOS version of the drivers.

You should probably have the best mouse driver for DOS. I've got both of them (ctmouse and ctmousep for ps2) as well as a bunch of others that might be handy for special occasions. I put them here for you. I hate mice, but you're welcome anyway. :)

Something much more important to me would be network card drivers. Here is a bunch for you.

Cheers,
Ole

PS: I just went to your site using Lynx in pure DOS and on a wireless network card in a laptop. Perhaps a guestbook for occasions like that would be a cool thing. :)

Thanks. Those will go up on my site this afternoon.

EDIT: I just added PKUNZIP to my downloads so people can actually extract the ZIP archives in DOS

Done. I just added an image uploader. I haven't tried it out yet, so let me know if it works!

Okay, Here are the changes I have made:

1. I have updated my tutorials a bit
2. I have added some apps and drivers to the downloads page
3. I have made the downloads page a little more organized

@Ole Juul: The drivers I added include the on you gave me, so if you would like to be listed as a contributor, let me know.

I don't need to be listed - thanks. However, I went to log into your forum last night, and I see no way to register directly. So I left again. You might want to look at that.
