Need help with "unresponsive" Teletek FDC-1C all in one computer-on-a-board.

OK RAM ordered, hope these work, I just bought and paid for them.

What could go wrong now?

Bruce, why don't you just stick that Compupro RAM card that you have in the box?

I wanted to remove that variable from the mix. I didn't realize I had NO RAM, figured ALL those boards had a minimum amount to boot. The addressing and other issues I am still new to.

Since I have the chips on the way, I might as well stick with the one board boot gambit, until I have some progress. Then if it falls apart when I put RAM17 back in, it will be a different issue to track down, but not an unknown stumbling block.

Hope that makes sense, all this is so new, I want to use the "baby steps" process till Something happens to indicate progress.

Maybe just add one 6116 first, before trying to populate the whole bank ?

I had been thinking that the one chip with the FDC-1C sticker on it was part of the data handling but also had some RAM. I also wondered if all the operations were handled by the big Z-80***? Chips on the card above what I now learn are RAM sockets which are above the main Z-80 processor.

Could that stickered one be just the first of four RAM chips like the 6116's on the way?

Oh, the hand drawn board diagram calls for, left to right in the photo, P0= 2716, P1= 2716, P2= 2716, P3= 4118. Above my pay grade for the moment!

2716 is an EPROM, plain and simple. That 4118 is an old Mostek SRAM part (1Kx8 ). Fortunately, that 6116 that you ordered should work in that spot, even though it's 2Kx8--pin 19 is NC on the 4118 and A10 on the 6116, so you'll only be using half of the 6116.

If you run your finger across the 2716, you might be able to feel a slight bump where the erase window is, if there is one. Traditionally a sticker with the ROM name/version was stuck over that window. It's unlikely it's RAM, should it turn out not to be a 2716 EPROM,though, then you've got a problem since with out a ROM/EPROM, it won't do anything.

Pat, have you ever seen a 24-pin cerDIP 2716 that was not an EPROM? You're being too cautious. If the manual says " 2716", then it's a lead-pipe cinch that a 24-pin IC with a Teletek sticker on it is a 2716.

Well, yeah, but the moment I go "Oh, sure, that's definitely a 2716" it'll end up being something weird.
Maybe when he gets it working we can get a dump to play with.

Looks like P1 to P3 are for boot/monitor/etc. (EP)ROMS and p4 for 1K of RAM; considering the low density of RAM chips of the day there just wasn't any room for many RAM chips, if any, on the 'single-board' computers and most of them only had the EPROMs and maybe a minimal one or two K on board and relied on a separate RAM memory board for any serious stuff.

If you don't have any other test equipment, try measuring the voltages on the inputs and outputs of the 1488 and 1489 drivers, comparing normal (idle) readings to what you get when you hold down a key on the terminal, preferably at a low baud rate.

Well, RATS.

I actually ordered three of them, so two down one 50%. And as for the 2716 with the sticker on it; it has what feels like a depression at the UV window, but same as a bump, a bump in my road! :)

I expect those other two EPROMS will be something I can get at almost any decent Radio Shack.

Now I'm feeling that constriction again, tightness of chest, that feeling of wearing a bullseye on my back when I buy something on the daring and adventurous side!

Don't let that bother you. The one EPROM installed is probably the one you need--the others were options. Don't worry about the half-utilized 6116--they were as common as dirt (I have at least a drawer full), while the MK4118 1K units are considerably scarcer (read: higher-priced), so it's all good.

Remember that you're doing this because it's fun!

The days of when you could buy an EPROM at RatShack are long gone, my friend.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the EPROM you have contains software. EPROM's you buy are typically blank, and need to be programmed. (burned)
The other 6116's will come in handy down the road of your future acquisitions.

Yeah, that was supposed to be a HUGE tongue-in-cheek joke on me. :D

Fedex me one, I'll give you my Fedex acct# to bill to recipient, and I'll PayPal you the money tonight. bch{ at }alltech{ hyphen }systems{ dot }com

Charge me too much; WattaHey, I'm learning! I can put it in right away, and try to wake up my Machine.

The ones I ordered in a heated rush will be three weeks getting here from the Orient, ----somewhere... :dontgeti:

All this truly is fun. Would not be worth a plug nickel without finding this bonkers crowd though. True story.
