Pet 8296D no signs of life

however I always have drive 1 not working ... even by swapping the cables ..

You have the answer in your machine...

Can you make a video of the drives the 'correct' way around either working or not, and then a separate video with the same tests with the drive cables swapped over?

I should then be able to see for myself.

Dave

How can i do for this test? Only directory?

Good morning guys!
So these are videos with both drives config:

Swapped cable:

It is the drive that is faulty by the looks of it.

I am in Windermere this weekend at a DEC event, and then I am going to deliver a load of DEC equipment to a computer museum in York.

I will get back to your disk issue on Tuesday.

I haven't forgotten you...

Notice that when it works (on the right-hand-side disk drive) the LED illuminates on the disk drive itself.

when it fails (on the left-hand-side disk drive) no LED illuminates on the disk drive itself.

So, what I need next is fir you to do the following.

1. Check the wiring of the disk head connector (the 12-way connectors) for any signs of damaged wiring etc.

2. I need a detailed photograph showing the multicoloured cable arrangement to the connector that is not connected to the disk drive heads. I need this to check for correspondance between what you have and what is documented in the disk drive technical manual.

On the 'faulty' drive (left-hand-disk drive) I DON'T hear the motor start running but I do hear the stepper motor homing the head to track 0. So I suspect this to be a similar issue to the faulty disk drive you had with the other disk drive unit where the motor didn't run.

Can you see/hear the left hand drive motor running or not?

Dave

They look like the cables to the heads ? Be careful with then as they are quite fine and easy to damage.

Will the motor spin by hand ? Is the belt intact ?

As Gary says, these are the disk head cables. Just check these for damage.

It is the OTHER cable/connector FROM the disk drive that has the multicolour wires I am interested in.

Dave

Ok... These?

If i try read a dir on drive 1 i can't hear spinning but i can only see header moves...

Which motor are you thinking about?

The motor is underneath the drive...

Dave
Yeah I saw Dave, today I took the drive apart and checked underneath, the motor disc was spinning freely ... this is a direct drive motor, there are windings under the disc. I checked that they were all connected in the meantime ....
