Very strange: I just drove by one that appears to be in business, in Chilton, WI.

Privately owned probably. I have an Arthur Treachers fish and chips store by me, only 7 left in the world out of 800 that used to be after the corp. went bankrupt.

I sure miss that place. So much that my wife and I plan at some point to head in your direction just to go to one. Fortunately we still have Rocky Rococo.

I need a few things. Could you stop in maybe?

Do they still serve f & c in used newspapers in the UK? I know they did up until the mid 90s. Not for anything, but isn't that unappetizing?

I pulled in to the parking lot just enough to verify that it was actually in business. It's inside a hardware store. There's something like this in Stallis or Greenfield, which I haven't had an opportunity to check out yet.
I resisted going in to look round on account of I still had three more hours of driving to do, and, I couldn't think of anything I actually needed from there. Give me a week and I'll think of something, but doubt I'll be back in that area for some time.

There may be one or more A.T./Nathans in my area, but there definitely are a few in NJ. I wonder about the quality of the food. Long John Silvers, most of which seemed to have bellied up, was a tad on the greasy disgusting side. Well made f & t, which is probably common place in the UK (despite being served in yesterday's newspaper), certainly is a treat. Nathans - never was a big fan. I worked at an arcade many eons ago and that was adjoined to a Nathans. I did eat there, but it wasn't terribly often.

Long John Silvers is pretty much what you'd expect from fast food. Arthur Treacher's is (or at least was the last time I had it) better than many more expensive pubs/restaurants.

Sure if the fish is still good and the batter is good.

I made batter once. I bought some batter mix from walmart, used a fair amount of mustard, and substituted vegetable oil for iirc the water that was on the ingredients list. It came out PERFECT. Granted perfect as a fish batter, but I used it for fake fried chicken. I never was able to repeat the earlier success.

I've made it with beer, the only way we do that in these parts. It's been a long time though, and incidentally I had planned to do this, this coming Friday. But it's been a hectic week, so maybe, maybe not.

I make my own sometimes using a beer batter mix I get from Giant Eagle and a bottle of Corona. The cod turns out very well.louisiana-beer-batter-seafood-mix-350x400.jpg

Not newspaper any more and hasn't been for ages. I think that was rare by the mid 80s, even before it was actually banned. Nowadays you are most likely to get plain paper of the same sort, but some rather "pseudo"/wannabe-trendy places have special greaseproof paper that is printed with foodsafe ink to resemble newsprint... daft...

Ok, I get it. It was on account of the big war I presume. Dad used to tell me about it as he spent time in England (even after WWII as he was a merchant marine. That's how he met mom, poor guy :). I remember and episode of Lovejoy Mysteries where someone ate f&c from a newspaper. Perhaps for show (I.e some sort of nostalgic sentiment), or as you say they used faux newsprint. And I'm hungry I wish I.could get good f & c somewhere.

Is it all it's cracked up to be, even these days? Is the fish caught locally or shipped in from somewhere?

There are several hundred independently owned Radio Shack stores still in business today.

Yeah, they do have a small online presence and independently operated stores, sometimes within other stores like Hobbytown.

It doesn't seem like they've learned anything from their bankruptcy though, their products are still outlandishly expensive and the products they stock are usually stuff nobody wants.

The only thing I miss from them is their solder. It flowed really well on pretty much any iron I use and never had problems sticking to anything I was working on. I've tried several other solder brands and none really come close to working as well.

their component selection used to be great back in the 90s, but by the time of their bankruptcy, it had dwindled into just the bare basics like switches, diodes, resistors and LEDs, and it was all hideously expensive. It was good in a pinch, but not something you'd get your stock from.

Yes, I thought I mentioned it, but the Hobbytown in Toms River has a RS sign in the window. I've only been there once, can't say if they have a dedication d area, or they just order for you from the "catalog".

Mind you apart from their components, and I can't even speak to that to any degree, their products weren't particularly hot. Not in my experience. Their computer line was probably the cream of the crop in terms of quality.

Come to Milwaukee some time. Friday Night Fish Fry is a very serious thing here. Beer battered, deep fried cod or haddock, and fries (chips). Some places offer it on other days, but on Fridays, you can't miss it.

Is this stuff caught on the lakes...I imagine it would have to be. We were talking about AT though. Whenever I've seen them around here they were adjoined with a Nathans. I suppose if you're from NY you're kind of supposed to be gung ho over Nathans. But I've never been particularly crazy about them.

At this rate I may move to somewhere like Wisconsin. And if the f&c is that good maybe I'll stay even.
