Wanted: working 5 MB disk cartridge for the SyQuest SQ306R drive. Disk cartridge model number is SQ100. May also be labeled as "Q-PAK."

Cartridge color is typically white.

Fascinating. I had no idea Syquest had made drives that far back. I wish you the best of luck in finding the cartridge!

Huh, neat! I didn't know SyQuest made stuff that far back either! Post pictures and such once you have them up and running :)

Are they MO drives? Is there any "laser warning" on the drive???

I have SyJet (1.5GB) external SCSI and a SparQ (1.0GB) external parallel to SCSI drive, plus Iomega Jaz 1GB and 2GB external SCSI drives. I got interested in the removable disc tech. when on contract in Switzerland, where a bank had the smaller, I think SQ230 (230MB), drive.

They're going to be used in my Tecmar MacDrive, one of the first mass-storage systems for the Apple Macintosh. Scroll way down near the bottom of that article and there's a tear-down showing the SyQuest drive.

Will be posting a followup article of course once it's up and running thanks to Al. :)

The 5MB and 10 MB SyQuest drives used approximately 4" platters. Makes them very distinctive in a collection.

The annoying part of the SyQuest lineup is the 3.5" drives which had 7 different drive models but little upward compatibility. The 270 MB could read/write the 105 MB and the 230 MB could read/write the 135 MB but Sparq (1 GB), SyJet (1.5 GB), and the handful of prototype Quest (5 GB) drives all only handled a matching disk.

Have you done any documentation of the SASI to serial adapter board?

I suspect these carts were used with a MacDrive based on their labels. It would be cool to recover the data.

Forgot I read them. They are from a SOLOsystems workstation

Not yet, beyond what I've reported in that article. It's on my to-do list. ;)

Investigation will likely begin with disassembling the software driver.

Nope, these will be straight platter.

Your collection is similar to mine except I don't think I have a jaz 2gb and I've got sq88 and 2x sq200 and buuuuunnnnnncch of cartridges.

I believe I have some Syquest stuff; drives and cartridges in the <200MB range, and some 1GB and 1.5GB stuff. Any interest? (If so, I'll go searching)

I am looking for q-pak or sq100 this is 5MB. Do you have those?

So, do those early Syquest drives work with any MFM controller? And if so, do cartridges have to be formatted for that particular controller like actual drives do? If that’s the case, that would make things really awkward trying to swap a cartridge around between several systems.

Not trying to derail the thread, I’ve just always been curious about that.
