This is an idea I like, but what happens when something goes wrong? Say someone in the UK were to buy an Altair from someone in the US. You handled the US side and I handled the UK side. Well what happens if I drop it, or it's damaged between you leaving it in a shipping container and me pulling it out? If something like this were setup, IMHO it would be better to do it as a for profit business, with insurance etc. It's could also have issues with creating rifts between people. I dunno, I'm open to ideas about something like that, may be just need to iron out the bumps.
You're always taking a chance. Seems like it's better, in some instances anyway, if "real" flesh and bone are handling the transfers. You do have to be realistic though. There has to be an approved way of packing something for instance. In the least conceivable space and weight (no newspaper for instance, it's heavy). If people aren't willing to do a little dumpster diving LOL for soft foam, to save costs, then they shouldn't be involved. Each item/s can be prepacked by the person shipping in the event of a fellow collector. If it's something you say buy on ebay, it likely would have to be repacked by the receiver, or packed together with other items if going into a bulk crate. I'm not pretending to know anything about bulk shipments. I've shipped a few things to other countries, always small items. One brass locomotive I sent to japan, it wasn't even in a box, but rather just wrapped in many layers of foam. It looked like an (American) football LOL LOL LOL LOL. Got positive feedback. There was only 1 questionable shipment, an early one, yes I did use peanuts, but the receiver's credibility was very much in question. O/w never had a reported problem. I've shipped computers, monitors, heavy cast iron machine components. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. You just have to be willing to put in the extra effort to make ABSOLUTELY SURE the item gets their in the condition it was sent. There aren't a lot of people willing to put in the effort. Shipping 15 - 20 items seems like an arduous thing in the beginning, and it's been years, but after a while it wasn't bad at all. You gather what you need, then go to work. And virtually all my packing materials were cast offs.
If anyone needs help putting a shipment together, contact me I can likely walk you through it. It's easier when it's in front of you, and you know what you can (or sometimes can't) acquire to pack it. I've done lots of it. Awkward shaped items, all sorts of crap.
If people's credibility is in question, well generally we all have our methods for determining that, we' re all adults. If a grew of people were to get together and decide they wanted to make this happen, full disclosure would be necessary, names, addresses, driver's license copies, etc. etc.
