I would like to know the price of my IBM computer to sell it and raise money for my studies.

Hello to all the people of this prestigious forum. I'm from Argentina. As you can tell from the title, I'm trying to find out the price of my PC. I leave you images of it in a google drive link. If you have any questions about the internal components, please don't hesitate to ask.

It might help to know where you are located. Pricing varies a lot based on location. I recommend fixing the error message.

I would expect it to sell for a several hundred dollars excluding the costs of shipping. Few systems short of a Lisa prototype can be sold for enough to pay a complete education.

Thanks Krebizfan for the response. There I added where I'm from. Could you explain to me what a Lisa prototype is?

Just to ballpark for you (without looking at your link, list the parts if you want to) this is worth very roughly $400 in the US, if it all works. You might get a little more in the right circumstance. In Argentina I have no idea what it is worth.

I think $400 is a bit high. I still get offered a bunch in my area (5150, 5160, and 5170) for $200 asking price (before negotiating even begins). Since I have so many I turn them all down.

Id say $175 to $225 is average in the continental states. And there are so many of them out there currently.

Fair enough. I was going by asking prices on eBay which range around $300 - $1000 (😂) for complete systems. Seems to me like the 101 key keyboard is worth $100 (possibly more?), as is the monitor.

NEVER EVER GO BY ASKING PRICES ON EBAY.

ONLY GO BY SOLD PRICES ON EBAY.

Otherwise your just passing along insanity and stupidity. People can ask for the moon, it doesnt mean they will get it.

Edit.. Yeah there are a bunch of sexual deviants who seem to have some weird fetish with old keyboards. Old IBM's in particular and those sell for insane prices because of those weirdos. And in doing so they have developed a culture of separating keyboards from uncommon machines causing long term damage. Buncha freaks.

Whoa. Heh. It'll be ok. Deep breaths.

????

Why the listings? Is that to prove something? We have no idea how much it sold for. They can cancel the listing and it still shows up as sold. Ebay is duplicitous in how they operate. I know I am a seller.

I mean if it makes you feel better to believe they are worth alot more id be happy to sell you one for say $350.. Thats $50 less than the fictitious amount we just came up with...

I wrote incorrectly. A few years ago, a prototype Apple Macintosh using the Twiggy drives seen in the Apple Lisa sold for $150,000.

The "boot error" conspicuously displayed on start-up isn't a particularly auspicious sign.

Indeed. We could all nitpick forever about whether a "fair" price for this thing (in the United States) would be sub-$200 or $500 (both numbers are supportable based on eBay recent sales), in the grand scheme of things how much does it really matter? Whether it's 20,000 seats or 50,000 it's still a ballpark, not a 250,000 seat NASCAR stadium. IE, unless you live somewhere pretty, uhm, affordable, it's not going for a life-changing amount of cash. In the context of a US education even the higher number probably isn't paying for your first semester trip to the college bookstore.

And of course, yeah, unless you live in or near Argentina you probably don't have a lot of context for guessing what it's worth there. The thing that probably *is* fair to note is it's unlikely to sell for enough anywhere else to make it worth shipping *from* Argentina.(*)

(* Especially considering the plastic in those IBM monitors is like eggshells. It would be optimal to sell it for local pickup, but that usually dings the price estimate even more.)

IMO $400 is not an unreasonable price for the bundle. But that would be an ebay price, which is always top dollar since the buyers are worldwide.

If OP wants to sell locally without shipping, he might have trouble getting even $200.

I know about the boot error, i haven't tried fixing it. I could use a bit of help resolving it.

The "it'll be ok" was for calling IBM keyboard collectors "sexual deviants" in such strong terms. I was amused as much as anything.

I believe those are literal sale prices. You can search for "completed" or "sold" in Advanced search.

I don't need an 8088 or the CGA (I assume?) monitor or keyboard but someone might want them. If you have a bunch of genuine IBM keyboards and monitors and computers and you sell on eBay, you might try moving some of those, and why not at wishful prices, since it costs you nothing or next to nothing to let the system sit there for sale. I'm personally more likely to wait to get something at little more than the cost of shipping (or for local pickup) and add it to my junk pile.

You missed the point entirely.. i was talking about keyboard folks like the deskthority rejects.. i never said anything exclusively about IBM.

And again if you wanna go blow all your money because you have no patience or skills at finding things have at it. Just not sure why youd be proud of that.

A boot error could occur for a number of reasons:

BIOS configuration issue.
Disk controller fault.
Hard disk error.

Either way round, it demonstrates to a potential buyer that this machine does not work.

So your expectation of a sale price should reflect this.

You will potentially get more if you demonstrate a fully functional machine.

The problem was the keyboard, i fixed it. But i dont know assembler (i believe it is assembler), so i don't know how to continue
