PM database error

I believe they're still working on that issue as well. There was one on the Auctions thread on here that's not there (I even looked in my profile and that went AWOL), and luckily, I found the link the poster did post on here on that day, or the day before (cannot remember which day, though). Glad this site is getting back in shape, though. Thank you admins, CTOs, and mods for getting this site up and running once again. Kudos to everyone.

I also note that there are some forum postings for Feb 14 missing.

Keep in mind... there are some posts that will not be recovered. Specifically, those that were made after the last backup occured. It's impossible to restore an item that wasn't backed up. Unless the system is running some sort of continuous backup scheme there's going to be orphans.

This will entirely depend on what actually happened. But I suspect you are correct, the data that has been lost is probably gone forever.

Silly me, I thought modern databases used some sort of transaction logging.

We did 50 years ago, but then we didn't have the web.

This isn't a database issue.

This is effectively somebody ripping our machine out from under us. I'm sure the database worked fine, until everything past the last backup snapshot got tossed away.

That doesn't help much when the log is on the same drive that fails. :(

This wouldn't have happened if it had been in teh cloud :p

Off topic/unrelated/directed to some long gone idiots:
When the red light comes on on the RAID array, that means you replace the drive NOW, not wait for the next budget cycle!

Oh, look you didn't listen to what I said and another drive died anyway. No, that did not mean the second was still redundant, it was not that type of RAID!

Oh, of course your backup tape didn't work, I also told you that just putting a fresh tape in each night wasn't enough! You needed to verify it, and look at the logs. It has been failing for the past YEAR and you didn't notice! Idiots!

Curious: How could this have happened? What are the circumstances and who is responsible. Or, was this just an innocent act of someone don't knowing what was going on and inadvertently "put things away"?

Yea, Come on Mike B. We need to know why we were deprived of our addiction and who to blame;)

I did not handle the outage so my knowledge is second hand.

It sounds like our hosting company merged with another hosting company. And then somebody tried to consolidate or move our server around, and totally hosted it up.

Evan can provide more details; he opened the support ticket and has been following up. Nobody hacked us. But even in the cloud, if you don't have redundant systems and replicated data you are going to have a bad time if a machine fails or gets hosed.

Correct. I wasn't able to get all the details, but basically the hosting company made administrative mistakes. However I give them a lot of credit for quickly escalating the problem and working quickly to fix it overnight.

The Forum seems to work perfectly now. Although, the home page is still MIA. If I go to WWW.VCFED.ORG, I get the following;

You spelled our URL wrong.

Vcfed.org works fine.

Ok, I cleared my cache and now VCFED.ORG takes me to the VCF PNW page. Still not the Home Page.

PS
Sorry for the typo in my previous post. I was typing it correctly in my browser.
