Who are the silicon graphics enthusiast members here?

There's actually been recent developments on that in relation to cratered 74 series logic around the edge connector. I'm hoping to deliver a donor O2 to midwest this year to verify if this was a one-off or if this one blown chip might be the source of the fault.
Which chip is it that you fixed i’m VERY interested in this topic

U121. It's a 74F38 quad 2-input NAND buffer. We have not fixed it yet, hence why I'm sending a system out that is just as dead but does not have a cratered chip. We'll compare to see if it too is blown internally.

SGIs around here:
- 150MHz R4400SC Indy + IndyCam, XL24 graphics, IRIX 6.5.22. I do have the IndyBag and a Presenter but haven't hooked it up yet.
- 175MHz R10K Indigo2, Solid Impact graphics. Has 3D printed feet. Needs a new OS and some TLC.
- 900MHz R16K Fuel, V12 DCD, IRIX 6.5.30. This is my usual IRIX test box.

Interesting have to look into that if only nand gates were easy to test.

That’s one thing I need an cam for my o2 congrats on the fuel did you get it for cheap or pay current prices

I have a few SGI systems too. 12x Indigos with a variety of video options, several Indys, a few headless Challenge-S, some new in the box, an indigo2, an Origin 200 server with raid, 6x Origin 350 with 2x Numalink hubs and a infinite storage JABD, 2x O2s, Octane & Octane 2, a 540 Visual Workstation. I might have some more...

Any experiene with R4K Indigos? I have one that seems to have an overheating problem. My next step is to replace the thermal pad on the CPU and see if I can identify any other chips on the logic board that might be getting hot. Hard to do when you have to pull the board quickly after the machine locks up...

We have been using an inexpensive infrared camera to look for hot chips. Works well when on DRAM chip is way hotter than the others.

I did a short road trip to scrounge three Indy's out of a skip bin some years ago. Also recovered a funky Indy Presenter LCD screen where the backlight panel can be removed and the unit placed on an overhead projector. Sadly it's in poor shape.

I gave away a pile of SGI systems about ten years ago. They were all operational and fun to play with, but I was running out of space here.

It was SGI machines that got me started with the whole vintage computing thing to begin with. I bought an R4K Indigo2 SolidImpact way back in the spring of 2000. That was my first foray into Unix workstations, but it wasn't really all that old at the time. (Now, 23 years later, it's much more "vintage".) It has since been joined by an R4K Indigo Elan, dual-head Octane SE with Personal Video Option, and an Origin 300. Plus a half dozen Sun systems, three from DEC, and two from HP. Oh, and an Amiga 2000 that I've had since it was bought new in 1989!

I'm more active in the SGI community than I am here as a result of starting with SGIs before generalizing into Unix workstations.

Knock on wood, but replacing the thermal pad on the CPU heatsink appears to have solved my problem. The old pad fell to pieces when I removed the heatsink.

I used silicon .5 mm pad from an assorted set from Amazon. Just cut the pad to size from the bigger sheet.

I have an octane that I am messing around with.
I was the one who got some of the DEC stuff and the Guilows plane at the swap meet, still need to build that thing. Need to get some dope, new pins (I seem to have lost mine,) and model glue for it

I no longer have any SGIs but I did have some a number of years ago. My first was a Personal Iris that I picked up at a recycling center in the early 2000s. I then acquired a Indy 4600PC with XL-24 graphics. a 21" monitor, and keyboard / mouse from Greg Douglas of Reputable (it was helpful that I lived in the Denver metro area and could stop by his place to pick it up). A few years later I ended up picking up an R4K Indigo with Elan graphics and a lot of IRIX discs from someone who was giving it away for free. Unfortunately after years of sitting in the basement unused I ended up taking it all into work to have it recycled (this was back in 2006 when it was essentially worthless and I couldn't find anyone to take it off my hands). I am sad that I wasn't able to find a home for it so it went to recycling. Perhaps someone picked it up from the recycler like I did the PI.

While I loved the hardware and IRIX I didn't really have any software to run on it to make it anything other than a turn it on and play with the OS. I know it was out there but I had Linux and Sun systems which, in comparison, could run all the UNIX software I wanted. Some of the SGI specific software was too expensive or uninteresting to me so these systems were essentially idle most of their time with me.

You could run Hollidance, and SimCity. Listening to my friend Don Hopkins say "Bulldozer" was one of my older Indigo memories....

(I remember using Hollidance as a benchmark for SGIs and found out the mighty secret that an Indy extreme with the 4 GPUs was actually *slower* for Holldance than an Indy just running the CPU. It was when I realized SGI was doomed)

I’ve seen you on irixnet hood to see you here!
