Is there any quality difference between commercially produced floppies and floppies made on home computer?

Do commercially produced floppies (let's say IBM formatted 360k disks for simplicity's sake) offer any quality advantage over if you were to just create a floppy from your own PC? I'm not even sure what technology was used to produce software back in the day, but curious if it is any better...

Brightness not uniform - Apple //c momo CRT monitor

Got this untested and of course it was packed like garbage. When I power it on with no signal and brightness up, about 2/3 of the screen is green, the rest is black. I plugged in a PS2 and same thing. The text on the right of the screen looks bad too. Seems like the brightness is not...

Left shift key not working on a Model 4

I just bought a model 4, and don't know much about them. It was running frogger when I bought it so couldn't really test much. I brought it home and made some TRSDOS disks, but it seems the left shift key doesn't work. Other keys seem to double press at times. Before I tear into this...

iBM EGA 5154 monitor let out some magic smoke

I moved to a new place and all my computers haven't been touched in about a year and a half. I figured I better get them out of the garage since there are tons of mice I keep catching. I fired up my IBM AT and was surprised to see it powered right up. I have three 5170s and the few times I...

Ast Advantage! 16bit memory board causes 5170 not to boot when selecting two banks

I have an AST Advantage board that I've been using in one of my AT systems. It's been working fine using the first bank with 64k chips. The first bank is 128k and using that to backfill the base memory to 640k on the 5170. (512k on board on the 5170.) I decided to put more memory in the board...

IBM 5170 power supply blew up

I had a post HERE about an issue with a 5170 fixed disk card being wonky. I had replaced the three caps on the bottom of the card just to try and see if that helped... It didn't. It was advised to try the card in another machine which I was doing. This is a 5170 that I hardly use. The old...

IBM Fixed Disk and Diskette Drive Adapter For 5170

I must have a bad fixed disk card in one of my ATs. It occasionally throws a 601 error on post. Also it always throws a “ disk unusable” Error when trying to format a diskette. Reading is also flakey. Not sure what the issue is. I borrowed a card from my other system and it seemed to work...

Viewsonic CRT A90f+ vga cable repair/replacement

I got this CRT monitor for free a while ago. The guy neglected to mention there is some sort of break in the cable, where the red color drops out and takes a lot of fiddling to get it working. There may also be a short in the cable as well. When I had it hooked up to my 386, the thing would...

FTP get command, corrupted exe files that crash computer?

I started playing around with my older machines again after a long hiatus. Had a daughter born and she takes up a lot of free time so I haven't got to play with my junk much. This is why my memory is fuzzy when it comes to what I've done to transfer files. Anyway, I have a couple machines I...
