New Forums nits

>>> figured I'd start a topic folks could use to post their nits and nags about the new ones.

My impression is, this particular subtopic "Support Forum", is entirely about posting what's called nits and nags. But this thread seems to be actively responded to. My previously posted issue was resolved here: the "search" button is now available after login.

There's no "help" (currently) available for how-to-operate these XenForo / VCFed forums. The "help" that exists, lies at the very bottom of every screen. That's hard to reach given the length of some forum pages, plus the apparently-mandatory display of "rules" on every page at this time. That help is limited to a few features of embellishing messages. I'm aware that user-documentation is out of fashion., but those who need it are likely not so fashionable. I checked the XenForo Web site; the documents I could find was for administrators of the software.

Possibly related, is an apparent problem at the top of each page. The "home" button doesn't seem to become active (white) after being clicked. The displayed page seems to be at the top of the hierarchy: but apparently I'll have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to see that hierarchy. "Home" is another place where one is likely to find user-help documentation. Again, these are how-to-operate issues that some user-document or user-help might clarify. Or, like the search-button issue, this may be a getting-things-installed problem.

That's because there is no separate home page. Home is the forum, so that is what becomes highlighted. The tab could be dropped, as it's not needed.

Fixed avatar...
is there a way to collapse that giant list of blogs? And, can the forum get a unique favicon?

I also would like to collapse or eliminate the "giant list of blogs" - there's roughly 140 of them. I'm even unsure of their utility. A user-help document may be informative about their utility.

I was working on that, but so far it appears that that html tag isn’t supported In the field. I’ll keep fiddling with it.

Problem: People are using "Profile Posts" as private messages, but they are not private.

Click "What's new", scroll to the bottom, and you will see a bunch of messages that should be private.

Actually, where even are the private messages? I see some "conversations" crap.

What's needed is speculative, and an administrative issue. "Home" could have features like a collapsed display of forums and blogs; a user-help document link; the now ever-present rules-of-use document. In other words, a place of general or introductory, not specific, reference. In any event, when the home button is clicked, the button does not change to white/active (just to be clear on the question). What home could do is administrative. - regards

You probably didn't understand what I wrote. Home is just a link you provide and it's set to the forum's index page here. Yes, the link can be changed - but only to a page that exits already.

It's not going to ever become "white", as it's not a tab you can be "on". Check XenForo's own community forum if you don't believe me: https://xenforo.com/community/ (and click on Home)

Interesting question. I had not noticed that. There is an "undo", but that's not really the same thing.

Compared to some of my other sites that run basically the same thing, it an option and seems like it's just not turned on yet. Can't get over the speed of this site.

If I mistakenly start a reply, where's the "Cancel" button to abandon it?
Well, it's two fold.

First, if you start to reply and then just "go away", that's fine.

But if you come back to the thread, you'll find your "Draft" preloaded in the message are.

In the upper left is a "what's a floppy disk?" icon with an arrow. If you click on it, there's a "Delete Draft".

I THINK this will remove the draft from being SAVED, but it doesn't clear the message area.

What I end up doing is simply select all and delete and then click "Delete Draft".

Best I've found so far.

This is not personal about believing. I agree, I don't understand, because I don't know what to expect from XenForo operation. Because there's no user-documentation. I'll stop repeating "a lack of documentation". I clicked on xenforo.com's "home" - it took me to a home page of the Web site, that is out of all the forums. (shrug) I suggested previously, maybe a home-page could be constructed for purpose. I leave this matter to the admins. Thank you. - regards Herb

Well, I followed that suggestion - left the forum, came back - and this message stub was waiting. I had a second such abandoned message, I used the "delete draft" dialog, I'll see if that happened.

Otherwise, another go-away strategy seemed to work. While editing the reply, I simply refreshed the Web page on my browser. My message in progress did not appear. Not sure but I don't think there was a "draft" around after that. Seems like this will be resolved in due course. - Herb

“Conversations” is the PM system, for XenForo.

Hmmm. Seems conversations are contained with XenForo and are not actual emails. At best I found a profile option "alert me if my conversation gets a reply" or some such. Is that how "private messages" will work? I and recipient get a real-email alert? - regards Herb

After doing the migration, I setup some simple monitoring of the site - Counting posts. In the first 24 hours since I began monitoring we have 79 new posts. The top graph is the derivative of the bottom graphs (hourly). Bob Roswellvcfedposts.PNG

It looks like we have some ability to rename things. I tweaked "Conversations" to "Direct Messages" (I chose that nomenclature as I feel "Private Messages" is a misnomer, as they are not quite private, mods and admins can see them). Hopefully that clears up some of the confusion around the message system.

The forum is set to keep drafts for 24 hours, after that they go away, but there is no cancel button, which is apparently a design choice on the part of Xenforo. The prescribed way to do this is to click on the little floppy and select "Delete Drafts" or just wait for the save draft to expire on it's own.
